In May 2023, I was commissioned by TOSS, a Korean fintech company, to create 2D graphics for documentary about secondhand transaction fraud. I accepted the project immediately because I had previously collaborated with TOSS in 2022, TOSS boasts an exceptional design team and employs a content PD within the company, making them deeply invested in creating content. It was an excellent experience. As a result, I expected this project to be equally enjoyable and successful.
I got offered for making whole graphic design in documentary: Character, Motion Graphics and Animation.
Creating graphics for the entire 40-minute documentary presented a significant challenge.
Characters
I was tasked with creating two distinct types of characters for the documentary
1. A main character to symbolize the issue of secondhand fraud
2. Characters to conceal the identities of interviewees who were victims of secondhand fraud.
In South Korea, a brick is often seen as a symbol of secondhand fraud due to a well-known case that a fraudster sent a brick instead of the actual product. Therefore, the client requested a brick character as the main character in the documentary, which needed to combine humor with a creepy undertone.
The client requested a less cute and more creepy character design, featuring a vertical brick shape with a sense of mass. This would effectively represent the issue of secondhand fraud while maintaining an unsettling atmosphere.
Using the brick character, I created character faces to conceal the identities of the interviewees who were victims.
Initially, I was concerned that masking objects over the interviewees' faces like hands or cellphones might obstruct the character graphics, but the director suggested it would be better not to do so. This was good feedback that masking live hands and cellphones over the graphic faces would be interrupt watching documentary.
(and also a relief as it saved me some time on the project.)
Animation & Motion Graphics
Building upon the established character designs, I developed animations to narrate the secondhand fraud incidents. Additionally, I created motion graphics that effectively highlighted key statistics and textual information, along with implementing bold and visually impactful subtitle graphics.
At the early production, I was also working on the main poster for the documentary.
TOSS proposed combining crime evidence concepts with quirky graphics, resulting in the image shown above. However, to allow me to fully concentrate on the documentary production, TOSS considerately took over the poster creation, which was subsequently handled by their design team.
At the time of production, I was grateful for TOSS's consideration, as I was overwhelmed with working on both video and graphics simultaneously. But looking back now, I feel a bit sad that I couldn't further develop the poster, which was a fun work for me.
